Community Message- New Hybrid Model for April 12

Greetings, CY families!

Trimester Three Updates

Student Trimester 3 courses/schedules will be largely the same as previous trimesters except for classes that are on a trimester rotation (Health/PE/some electives).  There are some changes to the calendar (see Updated Timeline for March 29 – April 16, 2021 below) that should be reviewed with students.  These changes were finalized through a district-wide decision yesterday, so CY staff will communicate the most pressing change to students through Canvas (for March 29- April 2).  The rest of the changes will be communicated to students through advisory the week of March 29- April 2.

Students will be in their trimester 3 schedules when we return from Spring Break beginning Monday, March 29.  We will be in a distance learning model when returning from Spring Break, then on Monday, April 12, we will pivot to our new hybrid schedule.

New Middle School Schedule for Hybrid/Same School Online (SSO)

The middle school schedule is shifting significantly beginning the week of April 12.  We underwent a district process to arrive at the new schedule that all middle schools will be using.  The schedule allows for all students– each hybrid cohort and same school online students– to receive live Zoom instruction on A and B days and is a blend of both the current high school schedule and our brick and mortar schedule in a regular year. 

Essentially in this model, all students will have access to synchronous Zoom/Canvas lessons in the morning and asynchronous lessons in the afternoon.  Students coming into the building for hybrid will have the opportunity to receive support, extend their learning, focus on class projects, read outside of the curriculum and build community.  At home, same school online students will work on asych assignments, finish synch work, work in groups on classroom projects, and attend office hours after school and on Wednesdays.  The schedule is attached for your review– a few highlights below:

 

Monday and Tuesday on Regular A and B Days:

9:00 – 11:30. All students attend live Zoom classes including Advisory.  Students attend periods Advisory,1-3 on Mondays and Advisory, 4-6 on Tuesdays.  

12:40 – 3:10. The Blue Cohort (mostly A- L alphabetically) attends school in-person.  SSO students and Green Cohort  (mostly M- Z) complete asynch assignments at home and access office hours.  Students attend periods 1-3 on Mondays and 4-6 on Tuesdays. 
 

Wednesday Flex Days: 

9:00 – 12:00.  All students work on asynch assignments or finish up work from Monday/Tuesday.

12:30 – 2:00.  Students attend office hours, clubs and supports.

 

Thursday and Friday on Regular A and B Days

9:00 – 11:30. All students attend live Zoom classes including Advisory.  Students attend periods Advisory, 1-3 on Thursdays and Advisory, 4-6 on Fridays.  

12:40 – 3:10. The Green Cohort (mostly M- Z) attends school in-person.  SSO students and Blue Cohort complete asynch assignments at home and access office hours.  Students attend periods 1-3 on Thursdays and 4-6 on Fridays.

As a reminder, by default, cohorts are established based on last name– A-L for Blue Cohort and M-Z for Green Cohort.  We have processed parent requests and made sibling comparisons across K-12 which necessitated some cohort changes. Based on the survey responses we received, we were also able to use that information to ensure cohort size in each class is less than (or equal to) 15.– thank you!  If your student’s cohort is shifting from the default for any reason, you will receive notification from us. Additionally, students don’t need to worry about “cohort” assignments until April 12, so we will have time to communicate on the weeks leading up to the beginning of hybrid.  So, please enjoy Spring Break!

3/29 Asynch Day: Students log into their classes in Canvas and complete asynch 

assignments. No live Zoom sessions. (There will be assignments students are expected to complete before Tuesday)

3/30 A Day: Regular distance learning schedule with trimester three classes 

3/31 B Day: Regular distance learning schedule with trimester three classes 

4/1 A Day: Regular distance learning schedule with trimester three classes 

4/2 B Day: Regular distance learning schedule with trimester three classes
