Dear Cal Young Community,
We hope you are enjoying the summer season together with family and friends! As we approach the begining of the 2026-27 school year, Mr. Parks and I are happy to be back as your building administrators for our third year together. This will be a year of transition with several new staff members. Coming soon, I plan on sending an email update to give details on departing staff as well as new staff members joining our Cal Young team. We look forward to continuing to work with our staff, students, and families on building positive culture and the best learning enrivronment for our kids. The Cal Young staff is preparing the building for another year and a new group of CY students. We want to thank our custodial crew for detailing the building this summer. We are excited to reconnect with our staff, students, and families in September.
One of our focus areas this year will be to continue the frequency and quality of communication to our CY families. The education of our CY students is a partnership and we hope to help our parents feel connected. Of course, our office staff and teachers will continue to communicate in various ways to support families, but we also hope to use Parent Square (communications application), Canvas (the learning management system), and other tools to assist parents in their connection with curriculum and grades. Families can become Canvas “observers” of their student accounts when students begin school. Save the Date: Please plan on attending our Open House on Tuesday, September 22nd , with an activity fair at 5:15pm, and the program portion at 6:00 pm. At 6pm, parents will walk through a shortened version of their student’s schedule and meet our teachers. Our first Parent Group (PTO) meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 10th at 6pm. It was exciting to see the rebirth of our CYMS PTO last school year, and we look forward to the partnership with our parent volunteers as we move into 2026-27. We would love to have you involved, whether you can make the meetings, or just want to find ways to volunteer.

Membership in our Parent Teacher Organization gives families better knowledge of the CY program, as well as access to parent education events. As administrators at Cal Young, this is one of our most important goals: to strengthen our partnerships and continue to make this a community middle school that truly supports all students and cares for one another.

Each year, families sign a set of permissions and are given an opportunity to complete opt-out forms. This year, forms will be available for signature on September 2, at our Back To School Day.

This is a day for students to pick up their schedules, a copy of the new bell schedule, complete & submit forms, receive picture packets, drop off “building use” supplies, ask questions, and pay fees like yearbooks, athletics (pre-registration), instrument rental deposits, & general school support. Spirit Gear order forms and blank physical forms will also be available.

Sixth graders will begin by participating in a variety of welcome & orientation activities. Students DO NOT need to bring backpacks or school supplies. Lunch will be provided! The afternoon will include meeting our staff, getting locker assignments, & practicing their combinations, and continuing with their leadership student guides as they tour the building, coming acquainted with building expectations and procedures. If your student missed Back to School Day on September 2nd, they need to arrive by 8:30 a.m. and report to the school office to pickup their schedule and pay any appropriate fees.

1:00 pm - 3:40 pm
New 7th & 8th graders will begin their day at 1:00 pm by enjoying lunch, which is provided. They DO NOT need to bring their backpacks or school supplies. The afternoon will include meeting our staff, getting locker assignments, and joining the leadership students on a tour of the building as they become acquainted with the building expectations and procedures.
Note: There will be no mid-day transportation for these students to get to campus, so parents are responsible to make arrangements for this transportation.
If your student missed the Back to School Day on September 2nd, they need to arrive by 12:30 pm and report to the front office to pickup their schedule and pay any appropriate fees.

All students should bring their school supplies and be ready to start their day, seated in class, at 9:00 am. The school opens daily at 8:30, students report directly to the cafeteria for breakfast or simply gather with friends until the release bell sounds. |
We encourage all students to bike, walk or carpool to school. A covered bike area is available for students in front of the building. Please lock and secure items at all times. Students may not store bikes, skateboards, or scooters in the building.
Always use the crosswalks and bike paths when traveling to and from school. Students are expected to walk their wheels while on campus.
State law dictates that all students under age 16 must wear a helmet when riding bikes, using inline skates, skateboards or scooters.

Important Safety Procedures
To promote safety for all students, the following are our student drop off/pickup procedures:
1. The Northwest parking lot is for visitor parking and student drop/pickup area. Traffic in the loop, around this parking lot, is ONE-WAY, please follow the directional signs.
2. The Southwest parking loop is NOT a drop off or parking area for students. This area must remain vacant of all cars, at all times, for our buses to use throughout the school day.
3. Handicap spots are extremely limited and intended for use by those with handicap parking permits accessing the school building. Occupation of these spots for alternate purposes, even when appropriate permits are in place, prevents others the access they require. Please use the traffic loop for student pick-up/drop off.
Please note: Pick up and drop off times are busy and getting through the pickup/drop off loops can be time consuming. Consider using one of the surrounding streets, Terresa & Holly to the west, or Benson Ln to the east-behind the school as an alternate location.

September 9th -11th , we will follow special schedules with extended time for Advisory. As a building, we will review academic, social/emotional, and behavior expectations. Students will also have time to receive help with their lockers and student technology log-in trouble shooting as they acclimate back to the school year. |
Picture Day is Thursday, September 18. All students will have their picture taken, even if they are not purchasing pictures, as the photo is used for their Student ID card and yearbook. Students who would like to purchase photos will need to return their picture envelopes, with payment inside, on the day of photos OR families may order online before picture day by visiting mylifetouch.com and using picture ID# EVTVB7XWN

Breakfast and lunch service begins on Wednesday, September 9. Breakfast is served beginning at 8:30 all school days. Students can receive one free breakfast and one free lunch each day. Still hungry? Students may get additional meals or second entrees charged to their student meal account. Student who choose to purchase these items will be charged according to the current Nutrition Services price list.

Cal Young holds two student lunch periods. Lunch periods are determined by student's 4th period class. (Bell schedules with student lunches can be found at the Back to School Day event.

Please note, students are not allowed to order any type of food delivery and the school will not accept delivery of any items ordered by or for a student. This includes DoorDash and other delivery mechanisms for food & drink. For more information, please see pg 10 of the CYMS handbook. |
Please call our 24 Attendance Line to report any absences. For full day absences, calls should be made prior to 9:30 am to avoid receiving communications from our automated system.

For planned absence of 3 days or more, students need to make arrangements ahead of time by using the “Planned Absence From”, available in the office. The student will then take this form to each of their teachers, where they will be alerted of assignments they will be missing, which need to be made up on their return. |
When parents need to pick up their student early from school, please call the front office at least 30 minutes ahead of time. This allows ample time to ensure your student is ready for you to sign them out in the front office.

Remind your student to check the message board in the front office.
To avoid classroom disruptions, we ask that you please communicate “after school plans” with your students before they leave for school in the morning. Should you need to get a message to your child during the school day, or alert that a lunch has been dropped off, please call the front office & we will place their name on the Message Board. Students pass by this board on a regular basis, as well as when they go to lunch each day.
Student cell phones are to remain off and in lockers from 9:00 am to 3:40 pm (2:35 pm on Wednesday) at all times.

Health & PE are a combined course with students rotating through PE weeks and Health weeks throughout the year. Students will be given advance notice from their teacher when they will be switching from one class type to another to allow students to be adequately prepared for class.
Students will have access to a locker room and a gym locker. While locks are not provided, students may bring their own padlock for their gym locker. It is mandatory that students dress down for PE in appropriate t-shirt, shorts or sweats, and socks with athletic shoes. --See supply list for details on appropriate vs inappropriate PE attire.
Assistance for PE appropriate clothing is available for families facing financial hardship. Contact krivchuk_a@4j.lane.edu for more information.

Students are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle, labeled with their name, each day to school. We have multiple water bottle refill stations throughout the school available for student use. |
Students should not be sent to school with the following conditions:
- A fever with a temperature over 100 degrees. *Students are to remain home until they are fever free without the use of medication for 24 hours.
- A stomach ache, diarrhea, or inability to keep food down
- A rash

Middle school students are not permitted to self-carry medications. All medications must be administered through the health room. This applies to both prescription as well as over-the-counter medications.
All medications must be in their original bottle. Meds are stored in a locked cupboard in the health room. Medication consent forms and details are available in the front office.

Multiple volunteer opportunities are available. All volunteers must pass a background and screening check. Please note: if you have a current background check on file at another 4J school, you'll need to add Cal Young before you are cleared to volunteer.

All parents of Cal Young students are welcome to join or visit PTO meetings. The group meets monthly for parents to hear updates & volunteer opportunities that fit their interests and schedules, as well as organize and provide support for school and community events and fundraisers.
