Friday is our last day of school and is a half day. Dismissal is at 12:35. Buses will run on the half day schedule.
|
Yearbooks will be distributed on Tuesday to all students who ordered. Those who did not order a yearbook will receive an autograph book to collect memories with their classmates. While it is too late to order a yearbook, there is a tiny supply that will be available on a first come/first served basis on Tuesday morning. Cost is $30 and can be paid by cash, check made out to Cal Young, or card.
|
This week students will clean out their lockers on Thursday. They are also encouraged to stop by the lost and found. It is currently overflowing with jackets, water bottles, lunch boxes, and even shoes.
All items remaining after Friday will be donated to Assistance League of Eugene.
|
8th Grade students met today and went over expectations and logistics of next week. Each student was given a flier with the schedule for Wednesday & Thursday. Look for an email with today's slide show to be sent home to parents early next week.
Please remember that for 8th grade special schedules, buses will be running on their normal schedule.
*If your student is a bus rider, please note that they will need separate transportation arrangements to get home on Wednesday after we return from Camp Harlow.

Dear CYMS Parents and Staff,
As another school year comes to a close, I want to take a moment on behalf of the PTO to express our heartfelt gratitude to each of you for helping make this year such a success.
To our dedicated teachers, administrators, and staff: thank you for your unwavering commitment to our students. Your hard work, patience, creativity, and care create an environment where our children can learn, grow, and thrive. The impact you make every day extends far beyond the classroom, and we are deeply appreciative of all that you do. I am so grateful to be part of the community you have created at Cal Young Middle School.
To our parents and families: thank you for your support, generosity, and involvement throughout the year. Whether you volunteered your time, attended events, donated resources, supported fundraisers, or simply encouraged your children each day, your partnership strengthens our school community in countless ways.
This year, we celebrated many accomplishments together. We raised a total of $6,600 with Activity Night sales, track meet concessions, Dutch Mill Bulb sales and See's Candies fundraisers, No-Cook-Night dinners at Papa's and Chipotle, and recieved many generous donations. The PTO helped stock the food pantry weekly, cleaned up the staff room and the Lost and Found, hosted 5 PTO Pick Me Up's, and multiple staff appreciation events. From school events like the Family Fun Night in May to fundraising for a chance to meet Caesar the No Drama Llama, every success was made possible by the collective efforts of people who care deeply about our students and our school.
Serving as the founding PTO President of Cal Young Middle School has been both an honor and a privilege. I am continually inspired by the dedication, kindness, and spirit of collaboration that make our school such a special place. Together, we have created meaningful experiences and memories that will have a lasting impact on our students.
I'd also like to give a special thanks to the people who made the PTO possible: Amy Lee, Chris Bennion, Lisa Wahi-Yeh, Rani Conley, Franky Gomez, Jesus Hernandez, Rachel Allen and of course, Principal Young! They are my heroes!
As we head into summer, I hope you find time to relax, recharge, and enjoy time with family and friends. Thank you for your partnership, your support, and your commitment to the Cal Young community. I hope to see you again at our next PTO meeting on September 10th at 6pm in the CYMS library!
Wishing you a wonderful summer, and looking forward to another great year ahead.
With gratitude,
Emily Looney
PTO President (again!)

With schedules shifting for summer, it’s a great time for students to build healthy habits while having fun and growing their independence—whether that’s walking, biking, rolling, or riding the bus. Here are a few tips for getting around this summer and beyond.
What to Ride? E-bikes and e-scooters can be lots of fun and help students get around independently, but not all are legal for everyone or legal everywhere. Click here for quick tips.
- Age limits vary by device, but none are legal for youth under 14. See the City website for specifics and note that new laws go into effect in January.
- E-moto vs. e-bike: If it goes over 20 mph without pedaling, it’s an e-moto and is only allowed on private property. E-motos are not legal to ride on paths, streets or sidewalks. Some may look like e-bikes, so be sure you know what your student is riding.
- Helmets are required for riders under 16, no matter what they’re riding.
Don’t forget—walking, biking, and riding non-electric devices are another option for fun and mobility that are great for your health and good for the planet, too.
As for riding safely, no matter the ride, speed matters. Higher speeds means a higher risk of serious injury in a crash. Know how fast your student’s device can go and make sure they have the skills they need to avoid hurting themselves or others. Encourage them to travel at safe speeds and stay predictable and aware.
Looking for a fun and affordable way to get around? Ride the bus! It’s easy for families to explore the community together with free student passes and Lane Transit District’s Dollar Days of Summer. During July and August, adult fares are just $1.00/ride or $2.00/day pass. With a free Student Transit Pass available at your school’s main office, students can ride free all summer long.
We encourage all families to stay active, be safe, and have fun exploring this summer—we’ll see you in the fall!

The 1Pass is your kid's ticket to summer fun! The 1Pass is a card kids 18 and younger can use to access exciting destinations during the summer for a flat fee of $60. These carefully selected Eugene and Springfield destinations include entry to public pools, a trampoline park, bowling alley, driving range, disc golf course, miniature golf, museum and more.
Passes are selling fast.
50% scholarships are available. Parents can fill out the applications online at Recreation Scholarships | Eugene, OR Website . Or they can submit paper applications at any of our community centers or pools. The applications are available until June 30th, but we are getting low on 1Passes.

Shift Community Cycles is excited to welcome youth ages 8–14 to our 2026 Summer Camps.
At Shift Community Cycles, we believe The Bike is Just the Beginning. Our camps use bicycling as a pathway to confidence, independence, belonging, healthy activity, and community connection. Through cycling safety education, hands-on mechanical learning, and joyful riding experiences, youth build skills that extend far beyond the bicycle itself.
Our half-day camps (9 AM – 1 PM) are led by skilled, caring, and experienced instructors who are passionate about supporting young riders of all backgrounds and ability levels. All camps include Smart Cycling or League Certified Instructors who prioritize safety, encouragement, and positive youth development. Our Camp Leaders create welcoming environments where participants can build confidence, make friends, and safely explore their community through cycling.
All camps include:
- Smart Cycling or League Certified Instructors
- Snack and water
- T-shirt and camp giveaways
- Bicycle safety and riding instruction
- Hands-on bicycle mechanical learning
- Optional bike rentals for participants without access to a bicycle
We are committed to making our programs accessible to all families. Scholarships are available for qualifying participants, and Shift Community Cycles can also help support youth who need access to a bicycle or helmet in order to participate safely.
Our programs support youth development while advancing community health, transportation access, environmental sustainability, and belonging. We envision a world-class bicycle-friendly Lane County where cycling is safe, supported, and woven into the daily life of every community.
Enrollment for summer camps is currently open. Space is limited, and camps may fill quickly, so we encourage families to register early to reserve their spot.
