8th Grade Sheldon Visit

8th Grade students received a permission slip in their Science class to attend a field trip to Sheldon High School. This is a field trip that is open to all 8th graders regardless if they plan on attending Sheldon. This field trip will take place on Tuesday May 19th. During this field trip they will hear from Sheldon students and staff. Tour the school while classes are in session. Have a meal in the Sheldon cafeteria and learn more about what Sheldon offers. In order for your student to attend they must return the permission slip signed by parent/guardian by Tuesday May 5th. It can be turned into their Science teacher or the front office. Extras can be found in their science class or the front office.

Messages from the Cal Young Kitchen Staff

This last week, a lot of your nutrition staff came together to see new items that may be seen on next year's menu. Yes, we are already getting ready to plan for your students next year for breakfast and lunch items. This was an opportunity to meet new vendors and see if these new possibilities would work for us and our students.

Fun Facts

Apples can stay fresh for up to a year if put in the right environment! They typically contain 0g fat, 0mg cholesterol, and roughly 5g of fiber, making them a healthy, low-calorie snack guilt-free enjoyment at any time of day.

When a person is allergic to an apple. if it is heated up or turned into apple sauce they usually won't have the same reaction. Why? Well, heating the apple up changes the chemistry of the pollen that pollinated the flower that grew into the apple. So, while a person is allergic to apples, there is a chance to be able to eat a heated up apple or apple sauce. This is not always the case though.

Weekend Food Bags

Did you know? Cal Young sends 7-10 backpacks of food home each week to families in need. They are filled with food that has been donated from generous families that add a few things to their grocery list each week.

We will take any donation, but to make it easier, we have been asked to send specific requests each week. If you are able to donate 1 item or 10 - we would greatly appreciate it! You can drop off your donation at the school or reach out to the PTO at calyoungpto@gmail.com and we will arrange a pickup.

Requests for this week:

  • Tortillas
  • Beans
  • Rice
  • Salsa
  • Shredded or block cheese
  • Mayonnaise
  • Instant Oatmeal Packets
  • Cereal
  • Dish Soap
  • Laundry Soap

Things we can always use:
  • Tuna
  • Canned Chicken

There are times when we just don’t quite have enough to fill the bags on Thursday nights. If you want to be added to an email list for emergency needs, please fill out this brief form. There is no pressure to fill the request if you are unable to that week.

To stay up to date with all our activity, please join our email list by filling out this brief form. You can also join our facebook group by clicking here. Our next meeting is Thursday, 5/6 in the library.

Learn to Ride a Bike- A Free, All Ages, Drop-In Event For Not-Yet-Riders!

Thursday, May 7, 2026, 4:30-6:30 pm4J Education Center, 200 North Monroe St, Eugene
Do you or your child want to learn how to ride a bike? Join 4J, Bethel, and Springfield Safe Routes to School programs, the City of Eugene, the City of Springfield, Shift Community Cycles and Cascadia Mobility for this fun event with bike checks, free helmets and information about bike share.
We’ll start with balancing and gliding without pedals or training wheels. Some will learn to pedal in one session, while others may need more practice to reach that final goal. You don’t need your own bike to participate, but please bring a helmet and bike if you have one. Contact Safe Routes to School at mazze_s@4j.lane.edu or albee_b@4j.lane.edu with questions or to volunteer.
Tuesday, April 29, 4:00–6:00 p.m. at the Hilyard Community Center

Eugene 4J Safe Routes to School and the City of Eugene Adaptive Recreation program invite students and families to an Adaptive Bicycle Open House on Wednesday, April 29, 4:00–6:00 p.m. at the Hilyard Community Center.
Come explore a fleet of more than 20 adaptive bicycles designed to meet a wide range of needs. Options include recumbent trikes (for one or two riders), tandems, hand cycles, off-road wheelchairs, and more. It’s a great chance to see what’s possible and try out equipment in a welcoming, low-pressure setting.
Located next to the Amazon Park Path, the Hilyard Community Center offers a safe, car-free space to test ride different bikes. (Note: there are many types of bikes available, but a limited number of smaller sizes.)
This event is ideal for students and family members with ongoing or temporary physical or developmental disabilities and differences. While traditional two-wheel bikes don’t work for everyone, there are many exciting alternatives to explore.
Adaptive bicycles are also available to rent through the City of Eugene Adaptive Recreation program.
Come check it out and find the right ride for you!
