Welcome Back Cal Young

The 2025.26 school year is officially underway! If you are new to Cal Young this year, welcome to the Cal Young family! If you are a returning cougar, welcome back! Each week, this Week At a Glance newsletter will be sent out and posted to the Cal Young website. Most will not be as long as this first one.

In the calendar section above, date changes will be highlighted in yellow and no-school days will be in bold.

Parent Group Kick Off Meeting

Parents are invited to join our administrator team of Principal Young and Assistant Principal Parks for the first Parent Group meeting of the school year.

Come hear about school updates and volunteer opportunities as we move into the 2025-26 school year. We will also be discussing the vision for the future of our Cal Young PTO.

Tuesday, September 9th at 6:00 pm in the Cal Young Library.

School Pay & Student Fees

Throughout the school year, any monies collected for school fees, field trips, and fundraisers can be paid by cash or check in the front office, or by card on School Pay or by calling Ms. Alexis at 541-790-6414.

If your family missed our Back To School Day in August and you would like to take care of student fees, it isn't too late! With the button links below families can pay online for items like:
  • General School Support, $50- This contribution is what allows us to fund our elective courses-- keeping the paint flowing in art, the drones in the air in technology, new and exciting music coming down the hall in band and choir, the cameras capturing school moments in Digital Media, and the props setting the scene in theater. Additionally, this fund allows us to offset the cost of field trips and provide quarterly planners for each and every student.
  • Yearbook, $30 - Reserve a copy for your student and get a high quality yearbook that captures the essence of Cal Young. -Distributed in late June on a school-wide yearbook signing day
  • Cross Country, $50 - Co-ed Cross Country team, season runs September- October
  • Track & Field, $100- Co-ed Track & Field team, season runs March-May

New to School Pay? Follow the log-in link below, click on the ID card logo to create a new account. You'll need the email address you have on file with the school and your students ID# to register. Once registered, you can see all active options for payment for your student(s)

Oregon Shakespeare Festival- 8th Graders

Hey 8th Grade Families: We are offering our annual 8th grade overnight trip to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland on October 9-10, 2025. It's going to be another fun and memorable experience-- and a few spaces are still open! Students need to turn in the registration form to Ms. Hoke in Room 703 as soon as possible to save their spot!

After-School LEGO Opportunities

This fall, students have two different ways to get involved with the LEGO program after school:

FIRST LEGO League Challenge Team (Fridays, 3:45 PM to 5:45 PM) (First Meeting: September 12th)
This is a competitive robotics program-- not a LEGO club. Students design and code robots, research an innovation project, and practice teamwork skills as they prepare for the qualifier on December 13, with the change to advance to state in January.
  • Space is limited. Applications are available in the office
  • We also need at least 4 parent volunteers to serve as coaches. No robotics or coding experience is required -- just a willingness to support students!

Board Game & LEGO Club (Mondays, 3:45 - 4:30 PM) (First Meeting, Sept 15th)
This is a fun, informal space where students can free-build with LEGO Technic pieces or play board games. It's a relaxed social opportunity, not a structured competition.

Students are welcome to join one or both. Please contact connors_s@4j.lane.edu if you'd like to volunteer or have questions.

CYMS Turf Field

A notice to our community: Beginning Monday, September 8th, gate access to the CYMS track and turf field will be locked from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm, school days. This is in an effort to improve safety for our students during the school day and ensure our PE programs have unimpeded use of the space. We appreciate the understanding and support of our Cal Young community.

Student Drop Off/ Pick Up

Please remember, when picking up or dropping off your student, to keep the bus loop clear at all times. Parents should remain in their vehicles both at drop off and pick up times when using the drop off/ pick up loop.

There are limited spaces available for parking if you need to come into the building. Traffic on Gilham can easily become quite backed up during pick up time in particular.

Families may with to consider meeting their students along any of the following nearby streets: Holly, Teresa, Elanco, and Benson. If you do utilize the drop off loop, please be considerate of others, pull all the way forward, and watch for students as they cross to their family's vehicles.

Attendance Line

Please contact the Cal Young attendance phone line at 541-790-6454 to excuse your student due to illness or other excused absences. Students who come in to school late will need a medical note or other contact from the parent to excuse a tardy.

Drills

This coming week, we will hold the first of our regular emergency drills. Throughout the school year, students and staff will participate in a variety of emergency drills in addition to traditional fire drills. Advisory lessons will cover the different types of drills students will experience throughout the year.

Please note that during drills, there will not be any lave arrivals or early releases processed until the drill is complete. Students returning from appointments should wait until the completion of the drill for entry to the building. We encourage parents picking students up for appointments or early departures to call ahead whenever possible. If a drill is to be conducted during your pick up time, the office will inform you at the time of your call so adjustments can be made for your student pick up.

Early Pick- Up

We ask that appointments be scheduled during non- school hours as often as possible but recognize there are times when class must be missed to accommodate appointments. If you need to pick your child up from school early for an appointment or family reason, please call the front office, 541-790-6400, at least 30 minutes in advance of your needed pick up time. This allows us to have your student ready for you.

Parents do need to come in to the front office to sign their child out. Only those on a students approved list are permitted to pick a student up early from school.

Personal Devices

A reminder to families that 4J's devices policy is that all student personal devices be off and stored in lockers for the duration of the school day. This includes break times and lunch. The policy includes phones, tablets, air pods, music players, gaming devices, and all personal electronic devices.

If you need to contact your student during the day, please call the front office at 541-790-6400.

Volunteers

All adults who volunteer in the school are required to have an approved background check on file. Volunteer approvals and background checks are good for two calendar years. If you have not completed this process and would like to volunteer in the school, please complete the online application. Once approved, you will receive an email notice and you will be uploaded into our system.

Due to the volume of volunteers across the district, background checks can take a while to get processed. We recommend parents who think they may be interested in volunteering at some point in the year take the time early to complete the process. Please note that the background check does not commit you to any particular volunteering opportunity or event.

To check out current volunteer opportunities, please visit our volunteers page.

Transportation

How will your student get to school?
As we start of the school year, you may be thinking about how your student gets to school. Walking, biking, skating, scooting, riding the bus, or carpooling all build independence while supporting health, focus in class, and the environment. If driving is the only option, try parking a few blocks away and having them walk the rest. of the way It helps avoid parking lot stress and gives them some physical activity before the day begins.
  • Click here for general tips on safety and route planning for active travel to school.
  • Visit 4j.lane.edu/busroutes to find your student's bus route, if they are eligible for a school bus.
  • Your student can go to their school office to request a free Lane Transit District annual pass. It's usable year-round and is not just for school travel!
  • Interested in e-bikes? Take a look at our tip sheet with safety strategies and laws for e-bikes.
