Volunteering at Cal Young

The Cal Young Middle School Site Council has set goals to improve the connection between the school and community through participation in volunteering and parent groups (PTO, Site Council).

We know that schools have better outcomes for students when families and community members are engaged in and participate in school activities.

There are a range of opportunities allowing all to engage in some manner from daily to monthly roles and morning to afternoon experiences.

We would like to invite you all to be a part of our school community!

This site is still in progress, but you can list interest on our Sign Up Genius for some opportunities now! https://www.signupgenius.com/tabs/83c72de06a2c9ecc35-school

Volunteer opportunities at Cal Young Middle School:

Single Event  Opportunities

    • School Clean Up with Ekklesia (no formal volunteer paperwork required)
      • On August 27th from 9am to 12pm – Please come help trim some bushes, pull some weeds, and make the front of the school look great for the start of school!  All community members are welcome, however, Ekklesia Church is organizing some help to support the school.
    • Activity Nights
      • Come support our student safety while enjoying dancing and student fun!  There will be two activity nights, the first a Halloween theme on Oct. 28 from 7pm to 9pm and the second a Valentine theme on Feb. 10 from 7pm to 9pm.  The volunteer duties can be simply supervision or ticket taking or concessions support.  Come have some fun with our students!
    • Additional opportunities to come!!

Weekly Support Opportunities

    • Office Meeting Support:

      • Our office staff meets from 11:15am to 12pm on Fridays.  It is super helpful for the office staff to have a community volunteer help support receptionist duties while the office staff meets.  Otherwise there are a lot of interruptions!  This volunteer would need to be stable or consistent;  It could also be a few friends who share the duty!
    • Student Mentors:
      • Mentors for students can either be community members or parents.  Mentors host Friday lunch meetings with specific students who staff believe will benefit from adult mentorship.
      • There are two Friday lunches: 11:53am- 12:23pm and 12:37pm- 1:07pm
    • AVID Tutors:
      • AVID tutors are different than traditional tutors. AVID tutors help with tutorials in the classroom. Instead of having expertise in one or a few subjects and working with one student at a time, AVID tutors work with a small group of students to help them work through the tutorial process. During tutorials each student in the group will present a question, generated from any of their classes, about which they are confused or need help. Volunteers should like working with teenagers and be able to work in a classroom setting. Tutorials occur twice a week- typically Tuesdays and Thursdays- during 1st period. Any help would be appreciated. If you are only able to commit to one day a week, that will also be helpful!
      • Tutor training will be provided by the district prior to starting in the classroom.

  • Daily Support Opportunities
    • Crossing Guard Support:
      • Crossing Guards support safe student crossing of Gilham Rd.
      • Crossing guard needs are daily in the morning, 8:30am- 9am and after school 3:30pm- 4pm (Friday 2:30pm- 3:00pm).
    • Lunch and Break Time Supervision
      • There are CY staff that support the safety of students during morning break and lunch, however, parents and community members could provide additional resource to support student needs.  Volunteers could be parents, grandparents, or other community members who want to have fun interacting with students in a less structured environment and provide better supervision and safety.  The 15 minute morning break is M-Th 10:20am- 10:40am, 10:10am- 10:30am.  The lunch times are M- Th 12:20pm- 12:50pm and 1:15pm- 1:45pm (Friday 11:53am- 12:23pm and 12:37pm- 1:07pm).  Volunteers could support only breaks, only lunches or other combinations of their time!
    • Library Help
      • Library helpers support morning supervision and tasks in the library (8:30am- 9:30am) or during the lunch hours (see above) in the library.  Deb Short, our librarian, assists in the tasks and will support the volunteers.
