Please combat discriminatory language

Good afternoon, Cal Young families,
There have been a number of recent incidents of racial, ethnic, and gender harassment on the Cal Young Middle School campus.  Obviously, this is concerning for many reasons including the emotional safety of our student and staff community and the overall safety of the educational space.
I want to be clear…. The Cal Young Middle School staff stands together against bigotry, harassment, bullying, and any form of discrimination. It is a violation of district policy for any student or employee to discriminate against a student or employee, or to harass a student or employee, based on the student or employee’s actual or perceived protected class status.

We know a learning environment free of bigotry, harassment, bullying and discrimination is one where all students will learn at the highest level.  Our differences, not our similarities, are what makes us stronger as a whole. Our students come from all parts of our United States and from all parts of the world. Our school is a reflection of our larger community. We should challenge divisive rhetoric occurring in our community and across our nation.

Please have conversations at home with students about hateful, divisive, and discriminatory language and stand united against hate.  Our community will be stronger if we work together.
Sincerely,
Chris Mitchell
